What is Social Bookmarking?

 

Social Bookmarking websites allow you to store and share your bookmarks on the internet, instead of storing them to your browser. Del.icio.us is an example of a Social bookmarking site. Storing bookmarks to Delicious has many advantages. For example, by storing your bookmarks online rather than to your browser you are able to access or add bookmarks from any computer that has an internet connection. Also, because Delicious is a social website, you are able to view and add other people’s links. Delicious, also makes it easy to organize your bookmarks by using tags. Tags are keywords you can assign to your bookmarks.

 

Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based system of folders, although some services feature categories/folders or a combination of folders and tags. They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and include information about the number of users who have bookmarked them. Some social bookmarking services also draw inferences from the relationship of tags to create clusters of tags or bookmarks.

Many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for their lists of bookmarks, including lists organized by tags. This allows subscribers to become aware of new bookmarks as they are saved, shared, and tagged by other users. As these services have matured and grown more popular, they have added extra features such as ratings and comments on bookmarks, the ability to import and export bookmarks from browsers, emailing of bookmarks, web annotation, and groups or other social network features.

 

Using Del.icio.us in the Classroom...

 

You can use del.icio.us to keep track of all the source materials and commentary that you find online. Groups can utilize a shared account, special tag, or their Del.icio.us networks to accumulate and organize bookmarks that are related and useful to the entire group.

 

 

 

 

Advantages...

 

This system has several advantages over traditional automated resource location and classification software. All tag-based classification of Internet resources (such as web sites) is done by human beings, who understand the content of the resource, as opposed to software, which algorithmically attempts to determine the meaning of a resource. This provides for semantically classified tags, which are hard to find with contemporary search engines. Additionally, as people bookmark resources that they find useful, resources that are of more use are bookmarked by more users. Thus, such a system will "rank" a resource based on its perceived utility. This is arguably a more useful metric for end users than other systems which rank resources based on the number of external links pointing to it.

You can bookmark certain websites for worksheets, lesson plans, and websites.

 

Student Advantages....

 

You can bookmark specific articles for research papers, websites, and images.

 

 

How to set up a Del.icio.us account...

 

1. Go to http://del.icio.us/

2. Click on GET STARTED.

3. Enter details.

4. Install Buttons.

5. Take the tutorial.

 

How to add bookmarks and tags...

 

1. Go to your favorites.

2. Search for website. (yahoo)

3. Click on add.

4. Type in any notes.

5. Click save.

6. Now the website is saved in your favorites. You can access this from any computer.
