Definition of Video Conferencing

It is a technology that connects two or more people at different locations and allows them to communicate and share information. The different locations can be in the next room or even on opposite parts of the globe. It is a connection achieved by audio and video links that allow face-to-face and voice-to-voice communication simultaneously.

Equipment Needed

  • Both locations must have a computer with internet connection

  • Both locations must have a web cam with software

  • Microphones for each location

  • A Messenger Service downloaded onto the computer (i.e. MSN Messenger)

Software Needed or Hardware Needed

  • Software comes along with the purchase of your Web Cam
  • Software needs to be installed into your computer (Placed into CD Driver to be installed)
  • Microphone is plugged into your computer

How To Video Conference

In order to video conference with some one else you need:

1. A computer with high-speed internet

2. Someone to conference with

3. A webcam- some are built into computers, while others you need to buy separately

4. A video conferencing program such as MSN messenger, iChat, AIM, Skype, etc. with your own account

5. Time to sit and chat- you can group chat with up to 100 people or video conference with up to 9 other people!

How is it useful to Students?

  • Students can use web cams to connect to other students, experts in the field, people around the world.
  • Students who need to be absent due to illness (etc) can still attend class via web cams
  • Students may have study groups online to help study for tests
  • Make friendships with students from other parts of the country and the world
  • Do research project through live observations (Ashley Brumley)

How is it useful to Teachers?

  • Teachers and students can obtain information from public agencies (i.e. Universities, libraries, museums)
  • Teachers can colloborate with other teachers and make plans and edit documents in real time
  • Teachers can set up virtual field trips or tours and expose them to places and things they would otherwise not be able to explore
  • Can be useful on keeping track of students while teacher is out (and substitute is in). (Andrew Naber)

History of Video Conferencing

  • Video Conferencing is a modern day form of distance learning
  • Distance Learning can be tracked down to the 19th Century
  • The Post Office used to deliver instructions to the students residence
  • Today's distance learning models have transformed from print, to radio and television to web-based and on-line resources
  • Video Conferencing enhances todays distance learning by adding the visual and sound element
  • Widely used in the business world and even with our Nation's defenses. (Andrew Naber)

How should the classroom be set up?

  • The monitor for mobile units should be set up for optimal view by all participants
  • Seating should be arranged for optimal audio output
  • In a classroom setting, arranging chairs around the unit or monitor would best accomodate all students
  • In a smaller group, it is best to place students around a table facing the camera (Need to get as many students in frame [Andrew Naber])
